29/10: san cristobal de las casas

... ist die ehemalige hauptstadt von chiapas. auf dem weg nach palenque haben wir dort einen tag genossen und die reiche kultur dieser alten stadt genossen

auf dem weg nach san cristobal wurden wir erneut von demonstranten aufgehalten. chiapas ist wie gesagt ein sehr armes bundesland (auch wenn man das in tuxtla nicht vermuten wuerde), das von der regierung scheints nicht unbedingt bevorteilt wird. nicht zuletzt aus diesem grund ist es die hochburg der zapatisten, einer linken vereinigung indigener bevoelkerung, die unter dem kuerzel EZLN agiert und von einer charismatischen lichtgestalt ("delegate zero" bzw. "subcommandate marcos") angefuehrt wird. in den anfaengen durchaus militant, wird jetzt eher die macht des wortes gesucht - und eben demos demos demos :)

san cristobal ist ein sehr touristisch beschlagenes oertchen, ca. 1h von tuxtla entfernt. die strasse fuehrt permanent bergauf, wodurch die stadt ca. 2000m ueber der hauptstadt liegt; logischweise ist das klima trockener und nicht ganz so heiss, also ganz nach unserem geschmack.
die kulturellen plaetze waren im ueberfluss vorhanden, und nachdem wir uns einquartiert hatten, ging es auch schon an die erkundung. leider waren wirklich viele andere touris unterwegs (ueblicherweise sind wir recht allein unterwegs), was unsere laune aber nicht verdarb :) stattdessen kletterten wir frohgemut herum, was ob der kurzen nacht zuvor gar nicht so logisch war.

unsere unterkunft war sehr nett, abgesehen von den spinnen, die unser zimmer bevoelkerten. ich habe seither am fuss eine bisswunde, die seit mittlerweile 10 tagen nicht verheilt ist... ist nix schlimmes, aber ich moechte nicht wissen, wie gross das viech war, dass mich da angeknabbert hat...
in der herberge lernten wir beim fruehstueck einen netten (und weitgereisten) mexikaner kennen. roberto gab uns nicht nur ein paar tips fuer neuseeland sondern ueberreichte uns auch einen "lonely planet", der uns seither das reisen in mexico erleichtert. danke nochmals :)

gegen mittag brachen wir dann auf nach palenque. eigentlich eine kurze fahrt, da nur 170km. sollte man meinen... 5h spaeter und kaeseweis sind wir dann angekommen... und es war eine feuchte erfahrung...
