11/10: auf der midway in san diego

die geschichte von san diego ist eigentlich kurz erzaehlt: um 9 waren wir von der volendam, und 1h spaeter auch schon in einem hotel. irgendwie waren wir nach der schiffsreise ziemlich fertig, wodurch wir eigentlich wenig motiviert waren, sachen zu unternehmen. trotzdem haben wir uns dann aufgemacht und wurden nicht enttaeuscht: es war gerade fleetweek in san diego, also die flottenwoche, wo die amerikanische marine irgendwelche speziellen sachen abhaelt. und wir waren genau an dem tag, an dem sie die schiffe praesentiert haben. wir also in den hafen und aus der ferne ein paar kreuzer beobachtet. da das dann doch langweiliger als erwartet war, haben wir uns nebenan in die midway verabschiedet. dieses riesige schiff ist ein alter flugzeugtraeger, war dareinst das groesste schiff der welt und mittlerweile ein schwimmendes museum, dass nicht nur einblicke in das damalige leben der seeleute bietet, sondern auch ein flugzeugmuseum beherbergt.

was soll ich sagen... ich bin wahrlich kein fanat, aber die midway war grossartig!! wir sind durch die engen gaenge im bauch des schiffs gekrochen, haben waffen und maschienenraeume besichtigt, die lebensbedingungen der crew studiert und natuerlich die flugzeuge gemustert. ich koennte hier wirklich stundenlang schreiben, weil wirklich alles faszinierend war... aber als kleines bespiel: an deck stand der hubschrauber, der die astronauten von apollo 11 (die mondlandung) und apollo 13 (die verunglueckte mission) geborgen hat! tjo...

und so ein detail am rande: auf der anderen seite des hafens liegt die "ronald reagan" (mit der nummer 76), der groesste aktuelle flugzeugtraeger. sicherlich eine boesartige kriegswaffe, trotzdem beeindruckend...
